Safe Riding:  Organizational Strategies

Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month …………………….…….. May
17th Annual Ride to Work Day ……………………….. July 16, 2008
Drive Safely to Work Week …………………….. October 6-10, 2008

How can your organization promote motorcycle safety to your workforce?  Below are two organizational strategies designed to help employers promote motorcycle safety to employee-motorcyclists and to all employee-motorists who share the road with motorcycles.

With the ever-increasing popularity of motorcycling, millions of employees ride either as a practical transportation alternative or for recreational purposes.  Sadly, motorcycle crashes are violent events; 80 percent of riders involved in a crash are either injured or killed.  This fact explains why the U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters calls motorcycles “our nation’s greatest highway safety challenge.”

The NETS Motorcycle Resource Center for Employers was developed to promote safe riding on and off the job and offers useful strategies and available resources from various motorcycle safety and advocacy organizations that can be used to keep employees safe on the road. Every employer has an opportunity to develop their own unique approach to encourage and support safe riding practices for their employee-riders and their families and to provide share the road guidelines for all employees.
