DSWW Work-Life Traffic Safety
Resources Workshop
Wednesday,
September 28, 2005
Baltimore, Maryland
|
Motor vehicle crash
injuries on and off the job cost employers nearly
$60 billion annually. One-third of this cost
results from off-the-job injuries to workers
and their dependents. Now, employers can reduce
these costs and protect their employees and their
families. Traffic safety work-life programs educate
employees about safe driving behaviors both on
and off the job, while creating a supportive
work environment that addresses the growing need
of employees to balance their professional and
personal lives. Workshop participants will learn
how to:
- Use NETS Work-Life Resources to reduce
the crash risks associated with employees
and their families.
- Safeguard
their organization’s
greatest assets—their employees and
their families.
- Strengthen
employee morale with a strategy that is
of real value to the organization’s
bottom line.

|
This
one-day DSWW Workshop will bring together loss
control and
risk management experts, human resource and EAP
providers, traffic safety experts to address
how off-the-job crashes involving employees and
their dependents impact organizations. Learn
from the nation’s top employers how and
why they’ve integrated traffic safety into
their corporate work-life programs. Topics that
will be addressed include: child passenger safety,
teen driving, underage drinking and driving,
older drivers, as well as motorcycle, pedestrian
and bicycle safety.
NETS
Work-Life resources will be provided to all
workshop participants.

Driving the Message Home: Make Traffic Safety
Work-Life Initiatives Work for Your Business
Description:
Each year there are an estimated 6 million
crashes that occur on our nation’s
roadways—many involve members of the workforce,
their children, relatives, friends, co-workers
or neighbors. These crashes cause a disruption
in the workplace through absenteeism, lowered
employee morale, lost productivity, loss of institutional
knowledge and retraining. This session will show
employers how to extend occupational safety programs
to include off-the-job traffic safety initiatives.
Speakers:
Elyce Biddle, PhD (Economist), Chief, Methods
and Analysis Team, Division of Safety Research,
NIOSH

(Child Passenger Safety, Underage Drinking & Driving, and Novice
Teen Drivers)
Description: This panel will present work-life
traffic safety initiatives that organizations
have implemented within the workplace to demonstrate
their concern for the safety of their employees’
families while on the roadway. These employee-friendly

and recognizing the changing needs of employees
at different points in their lives and careers.
They are good for business. They are good for
employees. And they are good for families.

Panel - Helping Employees Share the Road with Others:
Motorcycle, Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety
Description: Job performance is negatively affected
when employees struggle to balance their work and
personal lives and so is their driving. They may
be engaging in risky driving behaviors on and off
the job that significantly increase their crash
risk. People who are tired, in a rush, or mentally
focused on other issues create an unsafe environment.
This panel will discuss workplace initiatives that
focus attention on sharing the road safely with
others.
Speakers:
Michael Conway, Manager, Legislative Affairs,
Motorcycle Safety Foundation
Bill Nesper, Program Manager, League of American
Bicyclists
Esther Strawder, Safety Engineer, Federal Highway
Administration |

Panel
- Driving for Life: Options for Older Drivers
Description: As the number of older drivers increases, new mindsets
are necessary to prevent a corresponding increase in traffic crashes
and fatalities. Learn about new resources to educate your employees
and their families about the effects of aging on driving ability
and to encourage drivers to make wise choices, as they grow older.
Speakers:
Carl Soderstrom, MD, Associate Director of the
Medical Advisory Board, Maryland Motor Vehicle
Administration
