The Network of Employers for Traffic Safety will launch the 10th annual Drive Safely Work Week campaign to keep the U.S. workforce safe on the road. This year’s campaign, Safe Driving is Your Responsibility.  Make the Commitment. focuses on 10 steps for responsible driving that every motorist should follow to ensure their safety and the safety of others.

Keynote Address: Reducing Traffic Harm On and Off the Job

Insightful forecasts herald a future where cars and trucks on our roadways will communicate with each other and with the roadway in real time.  This technology will help drivers avoid crashes and reduce unpredictable delays by transforming the next generation of vehicles into communication hubs.

Safer and “Smarter” Vehicles

Vehicle manufacturers are designing and producing safer and “smarter” vehicles.  Preview safety and convenience features for the not-so-distant future.  Development of advanced vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle to roadside communication technologies have already progressed beyond the laboratory—along with many other life-saving devices.

Safer and “Smarter” Roadways

“Smart” roadway technologies are being put into place as quickly as they can be developed and funded.  Roadways are being created that are more tolerant and forgiving of error.  In the future, roadside equipment will coordinate with equipment in vehicles to warn drivers of potentially dangerous situations.

Employers will engage in moderator-led small group discussions to identify and prioritize opportunities and challenges from rapidly changing vehicles and roadways.  This exchange will be useful for employers in planning the critical steps to adapt to and best utilize advancing technology.

Advancing technology has the potential to improve driving performance by providing drivers with useful information on driving conditions and situations.  The million-dollar questions are:  What will the role of the driver be?  How much information can a driver process?  Will the driver’s job be more complicated?
