Scope of the Problem: Alcohol Misuse + Driving = Roadway Crashes
12.7 million people - some 8.9 percent of full-time employees – have an alcohol misuse problem. Despite safer vehicles and roadways, alcohol-impaired driving will affect one in three Americans during their lifetime; these crashes kill someone every 30 minutes and injure someone every two minutes.

Economic Cost of Alcohol Misuse on the Workplace
Alcohol is a contributing factor in 39 percent of all work-related crashes. When employees are involved in an alcohol-related crash, businesses incur costs associated with absenteeism, health care and disability benefits and worker’s compensation. When an employee is at fault then employers can be held responsible for legal and liability costs. To help employers identify their risk, an online tool that customizes and calculates the costs associated with employee alcohol misuse will be introduced.

Workplace Strategies to Reduce the Risk of Alcohol-Impaired Driving
With a relatively small investment in effective risk reduction strategies, employers can reduce their crash risk. Every employer needs clear policies on alcohol use and alcohol impaired driving with rules and consequences for breaking them. Effective hiring and monitoring practices can identify employees with poor driving records due to alcohol misuse. Health promotion initiatives can teach employees about safe alcohol use, prevent problems before they develop and identify problems before they become severe. Supervisors or managers trained to recognize problems can make referrals to employee assistance programs or other resources for intervention or treatment.
